Gun Safety Rules - 10 Rules to Must Follow!
You are probably asking yourself why you are reading it. It seems the gun safety rules are embedded into you with birth. We all know what to do, when and how. And even though, going out to practice, I see mistakes being made by the most seasoned gun enthusiasts, creating an unsafe environment for all. So, as my grandma used to say, repetition makes perfect. Let's repeat these 10 simple rules for gun safety.

Here are some essential gun safety rules that every responsible gun owner and shooter should follow. These rules help ensure safety for you, others around you, and the firearm itself:

1. Treat Every Firearm as if It’s Loaded

  • Always assume a firearm is loaded, even if you think it’s not.
  • This mental habit ensures that you handle the gun carefully at all times.

2. Never Point the Muzzle at Anything You’re Not Willing to Destroy

  • Always point the firearm in a safe direction, ideally toward the ground or into a safe backstop.
  • This prevents accidental harm or destruction in case of an accidental discharge.

3. Keep Your Finger Off the Trigger Until Ready to Shoot

  • Keep your finger straight and outside the trigger guard until you are ready to fire.
  • This prevents accidental discharges due to momentary distractions or slips.

4. Be Sure of Your Target and What's Beyond It

  • Always identify your target clearly and be aware of what lies behind it (a “backstop”).
  • This is crucial to avoid accidentally hitting unintended targets or people.

5. Ensure the Gun is Safe to Use

  • Always check for any malfunctions, jams, or issues with the gun before use.
  • Ensure it’s clean, properly loaded, and maintained to ensure safe firing.

6. Store Firearms Securely

  • Store firearms in a secure place away from unauthorized access, especially from children.
  • Use safes, locks, or other security devices to prevent accidental handling or theft.

7. Use Proper Ammunition

  • Always use the correct ammunition specified for your firearm model.
  • Using the wrong caliber or improper ammo can cause malfunctions or even catastrophic failures.

8. Wear Appropriate Safety Gear

  • Always wear ear protection and eye protection when shooting to prevent injury from noise and debris.
  • Ensure other shooters or bystanders do the same.

9. Don’t Rely on the Gun’s Safety Mechanism Alone

  • While safeties are important, they are not foolproof. Always follow the safety rules above and handle the gun responsibly.
  • Consider the safety as an added layer, but not a substitute for correct handling.

10. Be Mindful of Alcohol and Drugs

  • Never handle or fire a gun while under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any substance that impairs judgment or coordination.
  • Ensure your mental faculties are sharp when handling firearms to prevent accidents.

11. Always Maintain Control of the Firearm

  • Don’t leave a loaded firearm unattended or in a position where it could be easily accessed by someone else, especially a child.
  • When transporting firearms, ensure they are properly secured and unloaded if possible.

12. Know and Follow Local Laws

  • Be familiar with and follow all local, state, and federal laws regarding firearm ownership, use, and transportation.
  • Always stay updated on laws that may change over time.

By following these gun safety rules, you help create a safe environment for yourself and others while handling firearms. Firearm safety is not something to take lightly — it's essential for everyone involved, whether you're on a shooting range or at home.
